Sheltered below craggy gritstone snouts at the western fringe of the Peak District is Macclesfield Forest: the remains of a Norman hunting forest high above Macclesfield, a mix of fir and broadleaf woods to moorland edge pasture, overlooked by Shining Tor and the nearby hills of Tegg's Nose and Shutlingslow.  Sitka spruce, Japanese larch, Scots pine, Lodgepole pine, Corsican pine and Norway spruce, oak, sycamore and beech.
